Good morning!

This has been sitting in my drafts for weeks but after a few chats with different bloggers, I decided posts like this are important, even if they feel impossible to write and share.

On the week coming up to Christmas, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, an Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I know, what a great way to bring in the festive period, right?

I already knew a bit about the condition- when you’re as anxious as me, a runny nose can turn into a three hour WebMD research session. I’d Googled all of my symptoms and almost prepared myself but then I took it to the next level: causes, symptoms, demographics, treatments, tests, studies into the correlation between food and flare-ups, famous people with the disease… I’m now an IBD know-it-all. In hindsight, it probably wasn’t the best idea because I freaked myself out with the thoughts of life sans baked beans…

Since November, I’ve lost loads of weight, had joint pain in all of my joints (seriously, not all at once, but just one body part after the other), I’m generally more sleepy than normal, I have more tummy aches than usual, my appetite is up, then down, then up, then gone…Just to give you a tiny insight. But Christmas feels like ages ago, so where am I now? Well, I have officially started medicating- did someone say 12 tablets a day? Ha. Haha. Fun.

I’m also desperate to do something. I can’t help but feel incredibly helpless, knowing that thousands of people are suffering and there is no cure, no knowledge of causes- no real answers! I have vowed that as soon as I am relatively healthy again, I will find a way to do some serious fundraising! Right now, I think I can do something by talking.

When I first started to realise exactly what was going on, my first thought was to find people like me (young, oversharers…) talking, and that’s how I discovered spoonies! I’m not switching categories/genres- like I could ever commit to talking about one single topic- but I want to create discussion, or share some insight… I don’t know.

Every now and then, I’ll share updates or stories, and hopefully, even if just one IBD sufferer finds/ reads my blog, I’ll be making a difference!

Till next time…
